20 years ago today, Nelly Furtado released ‘Promiscuous’ ft. Timbaland. 

The Grammy-nominated classic, that went on to become a staple in pop culture, also became a staple in Nelly Furtado and Timbaland’s discographies. It was initially released as the second single off Nelly’s third studio album ‘Loose,’ with many critics calling it the highlight of the record. The track saw global success and went on to become a number one hit 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — making Nelly the first Canadian female artist since Celine Dion in 1998 to reach the top of the United States chart. 

The premise of the track follows a conversation by a man and a woman who view each other as “promiscuous” and its sound is retrospectively regarded as one of the signature music styles of its decade. At the 2006 Billboard Music Awards, the track took home the award for Best Pop Single of the Year. At the 49th Grammys, the track landed a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, but ended up losing to Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once In My Life.’ 

The chart-topper was the third best-selling song of 2006 in the United States. The track is both Nelly Furtado & Timbaland’s most streamed on Spotify, boasting over 1.9 billion streams to date. Its music video has garnered over 750 million views on YouTube. To date, the track has earned a 7x Platinum RIAA certification in the United States. It continues to be one of the defining hits of the 2000s.
