## Caption

Not all blue is the same.

The ice beneath your feet is not white, though photographs often make it appear that way. Look closer, into a crevasse, or pressed against the wall of a glacier, and you will find it. A blue so saturated it seems lit from within. Not sky blue. Not the blue of shallow water. Something denser, something older.

Snow accumulates over centuries and compresses into ice. As the layers compact, air bubbles are forced out, and what remains scatters light differently — absorbing red and reflecting blue. The deeper the ice, the more pronounced the effect.

Each shade is a record of pressure, time, and accumulation, and as you stare at this blue, you are looking at thousands of years made visible. The oldest ice on Earth is around 2.7 million years old, and Antarctica holds most of it.
