UC Berkeley is home to the world’s most advanced academic AI research lab. From helping computers “see” to creating next-generation robotics, their work explores the bleeding edge of how AI can transform our lives — and how it can do so responsibly and equitably, too.

BAIR, or Berkeley AI Research Lab, includes over 60 faculty and 300 graduate students working on a vast number of AI technologies. If you’ve ever used AI to reason through a problem or create an image, you’re probably using research that came from BAIR.

The lab’s projects include Berkeley Deep Drive, a group that’s helping self-driving cars to understand and navigate the world. In partnership with companies like GM, Toyota and Allstate, the group taps Berkeley faculty to develop AI tools that will allow autonomous vehicles to drive as safely and accurately as possible.

At the BAIR Responsible AI Initiative, researchers work to advance AI that is safe, secure, accountable and equitable. They explore AI’s impacts on areas like the environment and labor, helping to ensure that the data, methods and models used to create new AI tools are as just as they are innovative.

And BAIR’s experts have produced thousands of research papers contributing to a vast number of AI discoveries. They include the invention of Neural Radiance Fields, which transformed computer graphics and produced hundreds of products, such as Google Maps Immersive Views, and diffusion models, which lie at the heart of AI’s ability to create images and video from text inputs.

The lab’s students and faculty have gone on to start companies like OpenAI, Perplexity, Physical Intelligence, Skild, and other major AI and robotics unicorns — and all this is just the beginning.
