Yesterday was International Donor Conception Awareness Day. And I’ve been thinking a lot about how much of our lives are shaped by the meaning we give them.

The stories we tell.
The language we use.
The way we choose to frame our experiences.

Because the truth is, so much of it is made up.

So we might as well choose a story that feels expansive. That feels empowering. That feels good to live inside of.

Just over 7 years ago, I found out my dad was a sperm donor. It started with a few matches on 23andMe and Ancestry and turned into something so much bigger.

Today, there are 15 of us.

And now? Some of us are raising second-generation donor-conceived kids.

And if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t change my story. Not even if I could.

Because there is something so powerful and so beautiful about the ways families can be created.

Maybe I see it this way because of the life I’ve built. Being in a same-sex marriage means our children will always know their story includes more than just the two of us. And because of that, we’ve chosen honesty from the very beginning.

No secrets. No shame. No waiting. Just truth woven into their story from day one.

But I also realize that didn’t start with me. I was raised in a home where every year on our birthdays, my parents would retell our conception and birth stories.

And my hope is that this becomes the norm for all families. That all children grow up knowing their story — understanding how they came to be. Because there isn’t just one way to make a family. And there’s nothing more powerful than owning your story.
