PRSSA had the privilege of hearing from Elon University alumna Samantha Story ('12) about her journey from the Elon University School of Communications to her current role as Chief Communications Officer at Holy Angels!

Your journalism skills are more transferable than you think.

Crisis communication abilities, including covering natural disasters, fact-checking under pressure, and staying calm in chaos, translate directly to corporate and nonprofit communications. Samantha uses these skills daily at Holy Angels, managing everything from reputation management to internal communications and supporting fundraising.

Building relationships is everything in media relations.

Build relationships with local journalists, talk to them, understand their schedules, and be your own reporter. Those genuine connections will get you coverage.

Don’t be afraid to start over.

Samantha stressed the importance of being comfortable in changing jobs or careers in order to find the right path for you. As she chased what she thought was her dream role of being a foreign correspondent, she realized an ideal job can turn out differently than planned. As she transitioned to a career in PR, she focused on intentionally choosing jobs that served the growth she needed when she needed it.
