On Wednesday, October 1st, Elon PRSSA had the privilege of hearing from three amazing Elon graduates who shared about their journeys in PR and communications:

Here are 3 takeaways from our amazing panelists!

1. Customize every application.

Our panelists emphasized the importance of customizing applications by tailoring cover letters and resumes to specific internship and job descriptions. Abby emphasized the importance of incorporating keywords from job descriptions into submission materials. Utilizing this method, an application may be more likely to get past initial hiring rounds and further into the process.

2. Stay open-minded to new paths in the communications field.

When discussing advice on networking and taking advantage of opportunities during her Elon experience, Leah suggested exploring parallel career fields. She emphasized the importance of staying open to unexpected opportunities and exploring multiple fields, as your major or first internship don’t define your entire career. Leah encouraged us to try new things and not feel pressured to pick a lane too early.

3. Be confident in your curiosity.

Touching on what panelists wished someone had told them before they started their careers, Kaitlyn emphasized that no one expects you to know everything. Raise your hand, show curiosity, and ask questions! It's more impressive to ask questions and take advantage of new opportunities; people would rather you ask questions than waste time.

A huge thank you to Abby Adams (Elon ‘24), Kaitlyn Merritt (Elon ‘22), and Leah Schneider (Elon ‘24) for your time, wisdom, and encouragement. Your insights on career navigation and preparation were invaluable!
