CW: Mention of sexual assault & domestic violence 

The month of April is recognized as a time to raise awareness but also show support to survivors of sexual assault. For me, this is important to do year-round. My philanthropy work started in this space of offering ways and raising awareness to rehabilitate women and young girls who were victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This work started years ago in hopes of things changing - a future where women and young girls would not be victims to such inexcusable behaviours.

But, the battle continues and we collectively need to get louder about ending violence and supporting victims. I have teamed up with thechaimommas x mamajotes x saharacares to highlight the work being done by Sahara. 

SAHARA, meaning “support” in Hindi, was established in 1991 by a dedicated group of five clinical social workers and two physicians who came together to meet the underserved needs of the South Asian community in Southern California.

What began and was sustained for 14 years entirely through volunteer service has turned into a fully staffed agency supporting youth, older adults, and domestic violence support for survivors. They have also recently launched Sahara Youth, a program for youth volunteers.

SAHARA’s transitional living home is an inclusive and confidential space for survivors of gender based violence and sexual assault with culturally specific accommodations.
