This is guaranteed to get my parents going and asking where my “sharam” (my shame) has gone, but like I just don’t cook and I own up to it. But being a South Asian woman, the fact that I don’t make meals comes with it’s fair share of judgement from others.

Probably one of the first things I stood up against: why does a woman have to be the one stuck in the kitchen catering to everyone’s needs? Don’t get me wrong, I’ll cook when I need to, but in our household it’s a shared responsibility and by that I mean 95% of the time it’s hubby making the meals. And this doesn’t make me less of a woman or mother. And I do a bunch of other stuff, so don’t even.

Let’s be real though, I give hubby all the ideas and send him my Pinterest board, so I’m not completely removed from the process. 💁🏽‍♀️

It’s about shared responsibility over here and that’s what I’m making sure my girls are immune to growing up. But culturally speaking, it’s not easy to break and deconstruct these expectations, especially within our own communities - but, I’m trying.

This reel is also an accurate depiction of every meal time around here.
