Oh, mamas. This toddler stage the second time around is seriously kicking my butt. Let me just tell you, toddlers have the ‘tude that could literally push one to that tipping point. And that’s how my Monday started. With unforeseen meltdowns from the 20 monther that really kick-started my Monday in the right direction. Like in the direction of intense anxiety and mama tears.

You see, daycare drop-offs cannot and I repeat cannot be done by me. Something just goes off in the toddler’s little heart that makes it impossible for her to part ways from me for the day.

And because of life, I made the decision knowing how tough it is for the both of us, to do daycare drop off this morning. And, uh, it just didn’t go well. I had a moment of panic. I had to console my toddler at drop-off while holding up the drop-off line because protocol doesn’t allow me to go into the centre. And just in that split moment, my mom insecurities just kicked in. While my child was whaling and repeatedly saying, “NO, MAMA” I had to walk away. And felt like a terrible human.

Within 10 minutes I called the centre and asked the educator if everything was okay. It was no surprise that the toddler was giggling, eating snacks, and playing peek-a-boo with a friend.

ARE YOU FOR REAL, TODDLER?!

But perspective. I know this stage is tough because of the developments and change in behaviours. I can see the frustrations because she can’t express herself fully yet. And as a parent, I need to be there for her, even when she toys with my emotions, to remind and validate her that she’s understood. She’s seen. And she’s allowed to feel this way. These little humans are quite complex.

And as much as this stage can be challenging, it’s also my favourite stage. Seeing the world through their little eyes and all the particular things they discover is refreshing and endearing. I also don’t mind watching the same movie an obnoxious amount of times if it means it keeps her little heart happy. Remember, it’s all about perspective. ✨
