I was folding laundry the other day and randomly started thinking about something that I ALMOST wiped out of my memory. And I don’t think many people know this either. So, during my last year of university I picked up a cool part-time job with the business faculty at Carleton University. I was responsible for organizing and facilitating recruitment events. I would go in on the weekends and greet new students and speak about the university and sometimes give tours. I LOVED THIS. And it made me reflect on how much of a people person I am and but it took me time to get there.
.
I never used to be this way. I used to be the kid who hated answering the phones. I hated asking for help in stores. Speaking to strangers freaked me out. There was self-esteem issues and fears of being judged or criticized. But the more I worked on me, the better I felt. I got more comfortable with using my voice and not holding back. And it’s very much still a work in progress. When people tell me that I’m a natural on screen, what you don’t see behind the scenes are my nerves and anxiety shooting through the roof.
.
I’ve learned to accept me for who I am. I feed off peoples energies. I loved being surrounded by like-minded people. I’ve learned that not everyone will like me and that’s okay. I always say that all I need in my life are the good vibe folks who understand me for who I am. And my advice to all of you would be to never be afraid to show everyone who you are. There is space for all of us and I hold my arms open to all of these women (and all the women in my life) and encourage them to show up without fear and regrets. And although it’s taken me a while to get to where I am today, I’ve learned to trust the process. To give myself grace. And to just be me!
