Some fresh #mamauntoldthoughts coming your way! What compels us humans to compare ourselves to others? From a young age, the comparisons start. At infancy, weight/height and developmental milestones are continuously compared to other babies (without understanding backgrounds and genetics). I know some sort of a bench mark needs to be established but I have to be real here. As a first time mom, worrying about my child not meeting the average growth curve ate at me. Okay, forget about infancy, let’s talk about childhood. Growing up, how many of us have been compared to a sibling? A friend? And then in adulthood — have you been compared to a family member? A co-worker?

It’s ridiculous. But I do have to admit that I almost get caught up in the comparisons with my two girls. Both kids are developing at their own pace. Yet, here I am sometimes stressing about the slightest delay in a milestone being met and then the comparisons creep up. I don’t do it as much (it’s a work in progress). But they’re legitimately polar opposites and that’s okay. I just remind myself that just as I am my own person so are these little warriors.

Growing up I’ve dealt with my fair share of comparisons that in turn have led to negative effects. Self-doubt, lack of confidence, questioning my ability/purpose. This is a much deeper issue but I’ll leave it at that for now. As a mother, I’m equipping my kids to be proud of their own self and to never focus on what others are doing. It’s irrelevant. It’s unfortunate it’s the way our society and world works. From education to workplace. But if I can do my part to give them the right values and guidance and remind them to never shy away from showing the world who they are then I’ll take it as a step in the right direction to changing mindsets. Listen, I brought them into this world as originals, and as originals they shall remain.
