What matters most when people with advanced Parkinson’s disease choose between treatment options? A new study explored how patients and care partners weigh different advanced therapies as the disease progresses — when options may include medication pumps, infusion systems or deep brain stimulation (surgery).

Participants were asked to choose between pairs of hypothetical treatments that varied in symptom control, side effects, treatment method, and overall burden.
Two factors stood out most:
1. How the treatment is given
2. How well it controls symptoms

Overall, participants preferred oral medications first, followed by non-surgical infusion options, with surgical treatments least preferred. Bottom line: In advanced Parkinson’s disease, how a treatment fits into daily life can be just as important as how well it works.
