In a study led by researchers at the Fixel Institute and UF Health, 12% of Parkinson’s patients were identified as having pure apathy—a lack of motivation not tied to depression or anxiety. Yet over half (53%) of these individuals received no psychiatric diagnosis at all.

This finding highlights a major gap in how mental health symptoms are recognized and treated in PD, especially since apathy isn’t formally acknowledged in the DSM-5. Without proper diagnosis, critical symptoms may go unaddressed—impacting daily function and quality of life.
