## Caption

The Almond Board of California says roof rats have chewed through 100,000 acres statewide, with much of the “unprecedented” damage in the county’s southern and western groves. Losses are estimated at up to $310 million.

Growers report rats are cutting yields by 20% and even damaging tractors and irrigation lines. Attempts to fight back with bait, fumigation and traps have had limited success.
