LINCOLN, Neb. — A sweeping $600 million plan to remake Memorial Stadium has been approved. This includes new chairback seating, a reconfigured concourse and expanded year-round events.

At the Nebraska Board of Regents’ April meeting, the Regents approved a $600 million Memorial Stadium renovation by vote.

Called the 'Big Red Rebuild', it is designed to transform the stadium experience while addressing infrastructure needs and positioning Nebraska Athletics to compete financially in what officials described as a rapidly evolving college athletics landscape. Memorial Stadium has been home to Nebraska football since 1923 and marked its 100th anniversary during the 2023 season. Nebraska fans have filled the stadium since 1962, and the Huskers will enter the 2026 season with 410 consecutive home sellouts.

“The Board is set to consider this important initiative, which represents an incredible opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the entire University System and will bring real economic benefits to the state of Nebraska,” said University of Nebraska System Board of Regents Chairman Paul Kenney. “Memorial Stadium is a representation of our state’s values and traditions, and this restoration project will help preserve its legacy for future generations.”

Plans call for improved access, seat comfort, enhanced sightlines and upgraded amenities throughout the stadium. The redesign includes a newly connected East and West bowl intended to allow 360 degrees on the main concourse, aimed at making it easier to move throughout the stadium. The full buildout is planned to seat 80,000 fans in time for the 2028 season, including an additional 20,000 new chairback seats. The plan also includes 7,000 seats dedicated to Nebraska students and band members, with the student section relocated as part of the redesign.

Expanded concessions and restrooms are intended to reduce wait times, and the project includes improved ADA accessibility, according to the plan.

Project backers said the renovation would not rely on taxpayer dollars. Funding is expected to come from at least $250 million in philanthropic support and $350 million in private bond financing.

The university projects the plan would create more than 7,300 new jobs and generate an estimated $1.1 billion in statewide economic impact. Annual revenue from the renovated stadium is expected to reach $95 million, described as an increase of more than 40% above current levels. The plan also emphasizes expanding Memorial Stadium’s ability to host concerts and major events year-round, with the goal of positioning Lincoln as a destination for entertainment beyond football.

“This is a multi-generational opportunity to build on the legacy of Memorial Stadium while positioning the University of Nebraska for long-term success,” said University of Nebraska System President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. “Big Red Rebuild reflects a thoughtful, strategic investment in facilities that support not only athletics, but also our broader academic mission and student experience. By strengthening our ability to attract students, enhance engagement, and drive economic impact, this project advances the university’s commitment to excellence across the entire system.”

Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen called the project a long-term investment in the program’s future.

“Big Red Rebuild is a statement about the future of Nebraska Athletics,” Dannen said. “Memorial Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in all of college sports and this project ensures that our stadium is well-positioned for future generations. We have listened intently to Nebraska fans and are building a best-in-class fan experience that will also drive revenue for the University of Nebraska, create exciting new year-round programming for Nebraskans, create new opportunities for our student-athletes, and position Nebraska to compete and lead at the highest level in a rapidly evolving college athletics landscape.”

If approved, full construction would begin after the 2026 football season. The university expects the project to be about 50% complete for the 2027 season and fully complete in time for kickoff in 2028.

BE THE FIRST TO COMMENT
An earlier renovation plan was introduced in 2023 and approved by the Board of Regents with an estimated cost of $450 million. In late spring of 2024, that project was paused for a comprehensive review of scope, strategy and costs. The review identified several areas that needed to be addressed, including $200 million in mandatory deferred maintenance. The updated plan increased the overall scope and cost to $600 million and adds new revenue-generating elements, according to the proposal.
