New Heights Are Ahead 🌳🦧

Something exciting will soon be taking shape within the Indo-Malaya Pavilion 🧡🌿

With yesterday having been #WorldDesignDay, your Toronto Zoo is excited to announce that we’re reimagining (and re-building) our indoor Sumatran orangutan habitat to create a more complex, species-specific environment for this incredible species in our care.

Beginning this May, construction will transform their existing indoor habitat with new climbing structures, expanded enrichment features, and upgraded back-of-house areas to support the highest standard of care. We’re also introducing a brand-new play space for kids which will bring guests closer to viewing the Sumatran orangutans than ever before.

This project is part of our ongoing commitment to building world-class, state-of-the-art habitats that not only support animal well-being, but elevate every Zoo visit for both guests and members. From improved lighting and ventilation that replicate a tropical climate, to better connections between indoor and outdoor spaces, every detail is being designed with both animals and guests in mind.

It’s an exciting step forward for your Zoo, as we continue to expand how animal ambassadors experience their environment and how you engage with them.

While construction happens indoors, guests will still be able to see the critically endangered Sumatran orangutans explore their outdoor habitat (weather permitting). During your next Zoo visit, and as temperatures improve, you’ll be able to see these tree dwellers climb, forage, and engage in natural behaviours in the open air. Be sure to visit the Research Station, outdoor play space, and Treehouse – all accessible from inside the Indo-Malaya Pavilion.

Did you know? Enrichment plays a vital role in the lives of orangutans, encouraging problem-solving, physical activity, and natural behaviours. As part of this transformation, we are deepening our commitment to enrichment, introducing more dynamic and evolving opportunities that challenge and engage them every day.
