Today, we proudly celebrate #WorldVeterinaryDay and highlight a vital, and often unseen, role that veterinarians play in our world as Guardians of Well-being 🏥

When many people think of veterinarians, they think of caring for animals when they’re sick or injured. But veterinary medicine within a conservation organization and Zoo like ours reaches far beyond that.

Veterinarians are key contributors to global health, working at the intersection of animal health, human health, and environmental sustainability - something that we call the One Health approach.

Here at your Toronto Zoo, our veterinary team is deeply involved in this mission.
They care for a diverse range of species, many of them endangered, supporting conservation efforts both locally and globally. By working closely with welfare and nutrition science teams, they deliver individualized, lifelong preventive care through a holistic and integrated approach to animal well-being that ensures physical, mental and reproductive health.

The work of a Zoo veterinarian also plays an important role in protecting public health. By monitoring animal health and helping prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases - those that can be shared between animals and humans - our veterinary team contributes to a safer, healthier world for all. Every health check and preventative measure contributes to a larger goal: protecting the health of people, wildlife and wild spaces.

So today, we recognize and thank our veterinary professionals, not only for the care they provide, but for their leadership in animal well-being, disease prevention, and conservation.

Each and everyday, we are not only Guardians of Wild, but guardians of well-being, helping ensure a healthier future for all species.
