Demolition plans for a building in highlandoakdsm have been put on pause amid local preservationists' call for a second opinion whether it can be saved.

Invest DSM, a nonprofit neighborhood revitalization collaboration between desmoinesgov and Polk County, acquired the 108-year-old Tudor-style Highland Apartments on the southwest corner of Sixth and Euclid avenues in April with plans to tear it down in favor of an apartment building with affordable housing and retail space. Executive director Amber Lynch previously told the Des Moines Register the building was beyond repair and renovation options proved to be economically unfeasible.

invest_dsm  leaders pulled its request for a demolition permit from a recent city council agenda after a public outcry from local preservation advocates and community members who seek to offer alternatives to demolition. The 30-day extension, Lynch said, allows potential developers to take another look at the structure and explore rehabilitation options.
