Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old, which places it at roughly the halfway point of its total lifespan. The Sun, like all stars, will eventually exhaust its hydrogen fuel and expand into a red giant, growing large enough to engulf the inner planets, including Earth. This is estimated to happen in another 4 to 5 billion years, a natural and well understood stage in stellar evolution.
