From its striking design to its place on the waterfront, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s “Cupid’s Span” has a story. Here are 3 fun facts you might not know!

💘 The curved bow and string echo the forms of the nearby Bay Bridge, while also referencing Cupid, the Roman god of love.

💘 Its angled form and overall shape resemble a sailboat on the water, connecting the sculpture to its waterfront setting.

💘 Originally commissioned by Gap founders Donald and Doris Fisher in the late ‘90s for a new public park along San Francisco’s Embarcadero.

Artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen made the everyday unfamiliar by transforming common objects — a clothespin, a flashlight, a box of matches — into giant urban sculptures.
