After student protests over South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette being selected as the Spring 2026 commencement speaker, South Carolina State University announced it would move in a different direction for the ceremony.⁠

This was students using their voices and holding their institution accountable. At an HBCU, commencement is more than a ceremony. It is a celebration of legacy, culture, sacrifice, and community. ⁠
