Released on this day in April 1991, and celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Boyz II Men’s debut album #Cooleyhighharmony (which included the HIT, “Motownphilly) didn’t just introduce a group… it shifted the sound of R&B in the ‘90s.

The album title is a nod to the 1975 film “Cooley High”, a coming-of-age story about Black youth, friendship, and dreams. Boyz II Men flipped that inspiration into their own narrative, blending storytelling with the smooth, layered harmonies that would define a generation.

And “Motownphilly”? It’s exactly what it sounds like; a bridge between two worlds, Motown roots 🤝 Philadelphia soul.
