#TSRUpdatez: #TSRLocalLens—Last month, a plane collision at New York’s #LaGuardiaAirport left two Air Canada pilots deceased and several others injured. Now, the Port Authority will be implementing changes to its ground vehicles to help prevent future incidents.

According to ABC 7 New York, while the investigation into the collision is still ongoing, experts say that installing tracking devices on airport ground vehicles could have helped prevent the incident. The Port Authority will now install tracking devices on all its airport vehicles.

CBSNews notes that the air traffic controller who cleared the Air Canada aircraft and the Port Authority fire truck involved in the collision, did have access to a Federal Aviation Administration safety system designed to alert them about runway dangers. However, that system, which is called ASDE-X, did not alert the controller. The tracking devices, which are called transponders, send a signal to air traffic controllers so they can pinpoint where vehicles are while on the runway.

After giving clearance, audio revealed that the air traffic controller warned the fire truck to stop seconds before the fatal collision. The NTSB says that in order for ASDE-X to work well, airport vehicles need the tracking devices. The devices have reportedly been recommended for a while.

While experts say the tracking device could have helped prevent the incident, investigators are still working to determine its exact cause. They have not said that having the device on the truck alone could have completely stopped the collision. (📸: gettyimages) ✍🏾: #TSRStaffJW
