Hundreds of people gathered in Portland’s South Park Blocks downtown Friday afternoon to draw attention to May Day, as rallies unfolded across the state and the nation.

Organizers urged people to avoid school, work and shopping to demonstrate the power of everyday people — and to try to send a message to President Donald Trump about where the nation’s priorities should be. Uniting workers with immigrants was another theme of the rally.
