⚠️ 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓: #Leafs are reportedly closing in on a front office involving Mats Sundin and John Chayka at the top of the executive group, per friedgehnic. 

The team is currently waiting on a decision from Sundin on if he wants to join the Leafs. If the decision is yes, it will be Sundin/Chayka in Toronto. Currently unclear what Sundin’s role would be (many have speculated a higher role than some may think, maybe President of Hockey Ops), while Chayka would likely be named GM of the team.

Chayka, now 36-years old, was the former GM of #Yotes from 2016-2020, where he became the youngest GM in NHL history at time of hiring (26-yo). 

In January 2021, Chayka was suspended from working in the NHL for the remainder of the 2021 calendar year, with the NHL citing “conduct detrimental to the league and game”, and further ruled that Chayka had “breached his obligation to the club” by pursuing opportunities with other clubs while still under contract with Arizona, and then terminating his contract with three years remaining. Chayka and the Coyotes were later revealed to have hosted a private scouting combine for draft prospects. The Coyotes were subsequently forced to forfeit their second-round selection in the 2020 draft and their first-round pick in the 2021 draft.

He has since been reinstated, but hasn’t held an NHL position since his departure from Arizona.
