Today is Tibetan Calligraphy Day, a global celebration of Tibetan script as both artistic expression and a way of preserving language, cultural identity, and religious teachings. Observed on April 30 (4/30), the date reflects the four vowels and thirty letters of the Tibetan alphabet.

In Tibetan traditions, writing isn’t just about communication—it can also help focus the mind. Calligraphers describe forming each letter slowly and deliberately, using the act of writing to build attention and awareness.

This manuscript page from our collection showcases the rare gold-on-black style of Tibetan calligraphy, reserved for special texts like this Perfection of Wisdom sutra. The alternating lines of gold and silver mirror the colors of the two deities depicted, representing the union of wisdom (Manjushri, left) and compassion (Avalokiteshvara, right)—a central theme in Tibetan Buddhism.
