Freedom Day feels different when you grew up in the rural areas of South Africa.🤷🏼‍♀️🫶🏼

You learn early that freedom is not only about what is legally possible. It is also about what you believe you are worthy enough to reach for.

I have gone from small rural spaces to travelling the world, and one thing has stayed with me:

No matter how big the opportunity in front of us is, if we do not believe we are worth it, we will struggle to take the chance.

Because life can become a constant fight against poverty, not only financial poverty, but poverty of resources, love, respect, equality, dignity, and opportunity.

And yet, at the heart of our Constitution is something deeply human:

Our worth. 
Our dignity. 
Our humanity.

Ubuntu says: I am because we are.

But somewhere along the way, many of us forgot that we are worthy. We started trying to change ourselves to fit the standards of an ever-changing world, forgetting that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Before we are anything we achieve in this world, we are first children of God.

So may today not just be a public holiday where we spring-clean, finally face the laundry pile, or enjoy a lekker braai…😂

May it be a day where we remember what freedom asks of us.

To listen a little longer. 
To be a real friend, not a mind game. 
To be present without selfish ambition. 
To remember that just as I carry worries, dreams, pressure, and desire, so does the person next to me.

So here is my question to you:

How can you recognise the humanity in yourself today, and then offer that same humanity to someone else?

Because freedom is not finished.

It lives in how we see one another.🇿🇦
