Bangladesh Enters Nuclear Era ☢️🇧🇩

Bangladesh formally entered the nuclear power era on Tuesday, April 28, as uranium fuel loading began at Unit-1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, marking the country’s transition from construction to commissioning of its first-ever nuclear facility. The historic milestone makes Bangladesh the 33rd country in the world to generate electricity using nuclear energy and the third in South Asia after India and Pakistan.

The fuel loading process began after 3:30 PM and is expected to take between 21 and 30 days. Officials said the reactor core will be warmed up within three months by gradually withdrawing neutron absorbers, after which electricity will be generated on a trial basis and fed into the national grid. Around 300 megawatts of electricity is expected to be commercially generated from the first unit by late July or early August, with full-scale production expected by December 2026 or early 2027. Once both units are operational, the plant will produce a combined 2,400 megawatts, meeting 10–12% of Bangladesh’s electricity demand.

Built by Russian state contractor Atomstroyexport at an estimated cost of $12.65 billion, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is the largest single infrastructure project in Bangladesh’s history. Russia’s TVEL Fuel Company is providing the nuclear fuel, and Russia has agreed to take back the spent fuel using its own technology. The plant is built to post-Fukushima safety standards, featuring passive safety systems, 72-hour self-cooling without human intervention, a “core catcher” to contain molten fuel in the unlikely event of a meltdown, and double-containment reinforced concrete layers to prevent radiation leaks.

The project overcame the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and various global crises before reaching this stage. The plant is designed to operate for 60 years, with the possibility of extending its lifespan up to 100 years. Around 5,000 Russian specialists and 20,000 Bangladeshi workers have been involved in the project, with 59 Bangladeshi specialists already obtaining operating licenses after assessments.
