“There are very few things that bring the public's attention to focus on one thing in unison. And natural disasters is one of those,” says John Kelly of Graphika, which specializes in analyzing how content spreads online. He says some white nationalist groups are capitalizing on that attention, showing up after disasters in an attempt to broaden their appeal. “They’ve kind of decided to leave the more triggering iconography in the closet and try to appeal to a more mainstream audience.
