Today, we are crowning dancer and activist Sydney Mesher as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑

Originally from Portland, Oregon, Mesher was born without her left hand due to a rare congenital limb abnormality called symbrachydactyly. She found her passion for dance at a young age, starting classes at just three years old and continuing through college, where she pursued dance at Pace University. 

In 2019, Mesher made history when she joined the Radio City Rockettes. When she joined, she became the first Rockette with a visible disability in the 91 years since the troupe was founded. Since then, she’s danced on the “Today Show,” the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and NHK Japan’s Live Spring Broadcast. 

Mesher is passionate about using her platform to advocate for disability awareness and increased representation in entertainment, and she fights for a dance community that includes and celebrates all body types and abilities. She has worked with the Lucky Fin Project and Hands to Love Camp, organizations dedicated to raising awareness and supporting children with limb differences and their families, to share her story and connect with others in the limb-different community. In 2023, she published her children’s book She Kept Dancing, which tells the story of her journey from growing up with a disability to becoming a professional dancer. Having been inspired by books during her own childhood, Mesher saw the format as an important outlet to connect with kids and help start conversations about disability and inclusivity at a young age. 

As she enters another season as a Radio City Rockette, Mesher remains committed to advocating for representation, working to change perceptions of disabilities in entertainment and media, and sharing the message that “having a disability is power!”
