Families of victims from the tragic Tumbler Ridge, B.C. mass school shooting are now filing lawsuits seeking over $1 billion USD against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman‼️😳

The lawsuits allege the company failed to alert authorities despite identifying concerning behaviour from the shooter months before the attack. 

The February 10 tragedy left eight people dead and several others injured, shaking the small community and raising serious questions about responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence.

According to lawyers representing the families, the case is one of the most severe they’ve handled, with claims that the company’s systems may have indirectly enabled the situation by not escalating warning signs. 

OpenAI has since acknowledged the failure and issued an apology, stating they should have contacted law enforcement earlier.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon is now demanding clearer answers, saying the company’s response so far lacks a concrete action plan. 

He is expected to meet with Altman next week, as the federal government considers possible legislative changes around AI safety and accountability. 

Officials have also expressed frustration after a recent meeting in Ottawa where no detailed implementation plan was presented.

OpenAI says it will now strengthen its policies, including better detection of repeat offenders and clearer thresholds for when to alert police. Under updated systems, they say the shooter’s behaviour would now be flagged.

This case is quickly becoming a major moment in the global conversation around AI, responsibility, and public safety. 

Some believe companies must be held accountable when warning signs are missed, while others question how far that responsibility should go.

A developing story that could have long-term impacts on how AI is regulated moving forward.
