Friday night I went to @xoxobookboutique for Just Breaking the Rules with @laurenblakelybooks. It was such a fun night, loved the Q&A session with @laurapavlovauthor, but the best part was meeting one of my favorite romcom authors & along with one of my favorite small town authors too (I can't wait for Beefcake's story).

Just Breaking the Rules is pure Lauren Blakely magic and such a delightful kickoff to the Hockey Ever After series. This book is warm, witty, and swoony with just the right mix of heart, humor, and spice.

Corbin and Mabel are everything. He is the ultimate green flag hero. A pro hockey player, devoted single dad, quietly thoughtful, and endlessly supportive. She is a beautifully messy firecracker trying to reclaim her confidence and chase her dreams in a town that remembers her mistakes more than her growth. Their chemistry is effortless, but what really sold me was how mature and respectful their relationship felt. The communication, the partnership, the mutual support. It all worked.

And Charlotte. Absolute scene stealer. Corbin’s daughter is smart, organized, hilarious, and completely runs the show. Her relationship with her dad is wonderful, and her bond with Mabel is pure gold. Watching them team up and lovingly give Corbin a hard time was one of my favorite parts of the book.

The bakery setting, small town vibes, found love letters, and colorful cast of side characters made this story feel cozy and full. The banter sparkles, the spice delivers, and the emotional beats land without feeling heavy.

This is a feel good hockey romance that goes beyond tropes and delivers real heart. Lauren Blakely truly does not miss.
