Father and Son CASAs Champion Boys in Foster Care 💙 It all started with a simple Voices for Children magnet spotted at a Voices for Children volunteer recruitment table at a local Walmart. For Michael and Shawn, a father and son from Riverside County, that magnet sparked a journey that would lead them to become advocates for some of the most vulnerable children in our community.

After learning more about Voices for Children’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, Shawn was inspired to take the first step. He enrolled in Advocate University, the organization’s extensive training program that prepares volunteers to stand up for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Moved by his son's dedication, Michael soon followed. Though Shawn began the journey first, the two graduated together — and now serve as CASA volunteers for their own case youth.

For Michael and Shawn, volunteering together is deepening their own bond as father and son. At the same time, they’re showing boys in foster care what it looks like when men step into roles of care, trust, and advocacy. 

Their story is especially meaningful this Father’s Day. Across Riverside County, thousands of children are in foster care. Many of them are young boys who’ve had little experience with positive male role models. 

Their journey is more than heartwarming—it’s a call to action. Riverside County needs more male CASA volunteers. Because every child deserves someone in their corner who will advocate to ensure their voices are heard and needs are met.
