Vanessa entered foster care when she was only 8 years old due to domestic violence in the home. In the blink of an eye, Vanessa was separated from her mom, her home, and, most importantly, her brother, Christopher. Being placed into the foster care system was a highly traumatic experience for 8-year-old Vanessa, causing feelings of abandonment, loss of control, fear, and mistrust. As Vanessa faced countless challenges, she was assigned a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Laura. CASA Laura advocated for her and Christopher, getting to know them both as individuals to meet their different needs while bringing them together. 

From the beginning, CASA Laura was very invested in Vanessa's education, always asking how she was doing in school. When Vanessa tested into the Gifted and Talented Education program, CASA Laura advocated for her to attend a college-preparatory school that would offer her the academic resources she lacked. As she approached her high school graduation, CASA Laura was there to help Vanessa apply to colleges and explore majors. When Vanessa was admitted to UCLA, she felt like all her hard work had paid off, and she knew CASA Laura's unwavering support had helped her achieve this remarkable goal.
