Children facing abuse and neglect sometimes try to hide it. They may want to protect their parents and try to feel like a normal kid. Fortunately in some cases, children simply can’t conceal what’s going on at home.

“Everly” (9) and “Mila” (6) came to the attention of the authorities when it was reported that classmates refused to sit by the girls because of how they smelled. The school district tried to support the family by providing resources, like new clothes and laundry detergent. However, during an unannounced visit to their home, a social worker discovered the house covered in trash and dog feces. An investigation found that the girls would ask neighbors for food on nights and weekends when school was closed. When their living conditions didn’t improve, the sisters entered foster care.

CASA Dawn was assigned to Everly and Mila’s case in March 2019. The girls immediately took a liking to their CASA and always looked forward to visits from “Miss Dawn.” Just as Dawn was helping them come out of their shells, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Still, Dawn kept the girls engaged through frequent Zoom calls and craft kits she would drop off on their porch. Meanwhile, the resource parents (formerly known as foster parents) started the process to adopt Everly and Mila.

Thanks in part to support from CASA Dawn, the girls’ adoption was finalized just a few days ago! The sisters will be spending the holidays in a safe home with attentive and nurturing parents.

Three years ago, Everly and Mila were being shunned at school and feeling self-conscious. Now, they have developed great self-esteem and have lots of friends! Their days are filled with reading, roller skating, playing musical instruments, and more.

Everly and Mila finally get to have the normal childhood they always wanted.
