“Ellie” entered #fostercare at age 6 in 2014 and was matched with “Sharon,” her Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Now 13, Ellie remains in the system. She has no contact with any family members, but CASA Sharon is still by her side all these years later.

Ellie has lived in 12 different placements during her time in care. After every move, CASA Sharon worked with each new caregiver to ensure Ellie’s needs were met. Recently, a prospective adoption fell through, and Ellie was sent to live in a group home. She was devastated.

In an effort to help Ellie heal and find joy again, Sharon suggested she receive #equinetherapy, which had been effective in the past. However, both Ellie’s social worker and group home staff didn’t think the request would be approved because there were other types of therapy readily available where she lived.

CASA Sharon knew it was up to her to make this resource possible for Ellie. Sharon took the reins, researching equine therapy programs and finding one where Ellie could get a scholarship. She coordinated with the therapy provider, Ellie’s attorney, social worker, and group home staff to get the application submitted. Soon, she received word that Ellie was accepted!

Sharon also offered to drive Ellie to weekly equine therapy sessions, so transportation wouldn’t be an issue. After her first session, her CASA said that Ellie was “in heaven” being around the horses. Later, Ellie’s attorney reached out to CASA Sharon, praising her hard work and thanking her for her commitment.

Even though she had to jump through hoops, Sharon understood how much this opportunity meant to Ellie and did everything should could to make it happen.
