For National #Reunification Month, we’re sharing a story about how one CASA played a crucial role in bringing a family back together.

In March 2019, CASA Allison was assigned to siblings “Liam” and “Sadie, who entered foster care amid concerns about abuse, neglect, and ongoing homelessness. Allison learned that the children had never before attended school. She knew that getting Liam and Sadie set up academically, as well as addressing the trauma they’d experienced, were top priorities.

First, Allison developed a rapport with the children’s caregiver, who was a relative. This relationship ensured open communication and smooth scheduling of her monthly CASA visits. Allison also stayed in close contact with the children’s therapists. When one round of services was set to conclude, Allison talked to the team to determine the need for future support. In school, Allison continuously advocated for Sadie to receive a special education assessment and made sure this request was not lost when COVID-19 limited in-person assessments for students.

While CASA Allison was working hard advocating for the children, their biological mother, “Michelle,” was working hard, too. Determined and focused, Michelle attended therapy and did all the work necessary to get her children back.

Everyone’s efforts paid off. With CASA Allison’s support, Liam and Sadie returned to Michelle’s care for a trial period in March 2021, and the family was officially reunified last month. #OneChildataTime #OneFamilyataTime
