Each month, we share a story of a youth in local foster care and the ways they’ve received support from their Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. Since today is #NationalSiblingsDay, we’ll be highlighting a sibling set! Meet 8-year-old “Jackson,” 6-year-old “Ava,” 3-year-old “Harper,” and their CASA, Brittanie.

Brittanie acted as Jackson, Ava, and Harper’s CASA from 2018 until March 2020 when the children were reunited with their parents. Several months later, after reports of domestic violence and substance abuse in the home, the siblings found themselves back in the system. Fortunately, they were able to stay together and return to their previous foster home.

Meanwhile, Brittanie took a leave of absence from volunteering when her assignment ended. (The COVID-19 lockdown had recently begun, and she was homeschooling her niece and nephew whose parents were first responders.) However, as soon as she learned that Jackson, Ava, and Harper were back in foster care, she immediately agreed to return as their CASA. The siblings were thrilled!

With COVID-19 restrictions now in place, Brittanie had to find new ways to support the children. They became pen pals and sent each other snail mail, and she hosted virtual dance parties and storytime on Zoom! For each of their birthdays, she decorated her car and participated in drive-by parades, tossing out gifts and treats. We are so grateful for Brittanie’s dedication and creativity, and we know the children are, too.

You can be a constant in the life of a foster child or sibling group, like Jackson, Ava, and Harper. Learn more by signing up for an online Volunteer Information Session today >> bit.ly/CASA-Info
