Each month, we like to share the story of a youth in local foster care and the ways in which they’ve received support from their Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. This month, we spotlight the story of 12-year-old “James” and his CASA, Maria.

James was paired with CASA Maria in October of 2020. Due to issues at home prior to foster care, James had not attended school in nearly four years, with his education pausing at the third grade level. In December of 2020, James’s school counselor emailed Maria with the news that James was really struggling to catch up and, despite trying his hardest, was in danger of falling further behind.

James’s CASA recognized that the young boy was in serious need of additional academic support. She quickly got in contact with her Voices for Children advocacy supervisor and James’s caregivers, and by the next afternoon, submitted a referral form for tutoring services. The request was approved, and James began receiving tutoring this January. He is now equipped with important resources to help boost his educational development.

There are many children in local foster care that face similar challenges as James. Like CASA Maria, you can provide impactful resources to a child by becoming a CASA volunteer. Learn more by signing up for an online Volunteer Information Session today: bit.ly/CASA-Info
