Families in Malawi face serious challenges from limited access to clean water, poor sanitation, and ongoing food insecurity made worse by drought. Chiimba Church of the Nazarene is addressing these needs through a holistic project that provides clean water, community hygiene, and agriculture education.

A newly constructed borehole well is having an immediate impact. The church established a water point committee to monitor and repair the well when needed. Hundreds of families in this community can now access clean, safe drinking water.

“Women suffered the most with absence of a borehole as they had to travel extensive distances to obtain water from a neighboring village,” said a village leader. “Sometimes they would collect water from other sources which were contaminated and this led to illnesses. Our village now has clean water available, which has reduced our time burdens and helped us stay healthy.”

By training young people as WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) educators, the project’s impact extends beyond the well drilled on their campus. Through their efforts, individuals and families are learning safe water-handling methods, proper handwashing skills, and disease-prevention practices. Thanks to the encouraging guidance of these educators, 75 home latrines have been constructed thus far.

“This training has enabled me to understand and address local issues, communicate hygiene messages clearly, and engage communities in developing sustainable and inclusive WASH solutions,” said Efelo, a young woman equipped as a WASH educator. 

“I am excited that I have managed to build a latrine on my own,” shared Lidia, a project participant. She shared that owning a household latrine is crucial for public health, improving personal safety, and granting dignity. “[The] lack of a latrine increased my risk of violence and harassment,” she explained. “I am now a happy and a dignified woman.”

Efelo recognizes that through her efforts and that of other WASH educators, their local church’s impact is growing in new ways. “As a member of the Church of Nazarene, the project has helped me to help people in my community holistically.”
