At the beginning of October, two tropical storms brought heavy rainfall that caused catastrophic flooding and landslides in central and eastern Mexico. Damaged roads and downed trees have isolated hundreds of villages from the outside world. At least 64 people have died, and dozens more remain missing. The hardest-hit states are Veracruz, Hidalgo, and Puebla.

Hundreds of thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, and dozens of health centers were affected, creating additional challenges for residents needing medical care. In Poza Rica, an oil town, thick black residue from local facilities mixed with floodwaters, coating trees, cars, and houses and further complicating cleanup efforts. Health teams are fumigating impacted areas in an attempt to prevent dengue outbreaks. Tens of thousands of military personnel and civilian rescue workers are delivering food and water to isolated communities and evacuating those who are injured or ill.

Nazarenes in Mexico are mobilizing in response to this disaster. Volunteer teams are already at work in northern Veracruz, helping families clean out their homes and offering spiritual support and prayer as they serve. The Nazarene Medical Brigade, a volunteer team of health professionals, is providing medical care to those in need. Teams are currently serving in Poza Rica and Alamos.

This first-stage response will include providing temporary shelter for 50 displaced people at the Church of the Nazarene in Poza Rica, ensuring they have access to showers, hot meals, and a safe place to sleep. Food distributions will reach additional community members, and pastors and volunteers will offer spiritual and emotional support as an expression of Christ’s love.

“We believe in a God who moves mountains, who calls us to have a compassionate heart, serving as instruments of relief for physical and spiritual suffering, and above all, to respond with action,” shared a team leader. “We thank God for mobilizing His body—those who are praying, giving, and offering their hands, time, skills, and professions.”
