Today, we are starting a new series titled 'One Child at a Time'! Every Second Saturday, we will share a real story of a local child or sibling group in the foster care system. For January, we begin with the story of “Andrew.” Andrew's father passed away when he was a baby, and his mother struggled to raise him on her own. She soon turned to drugs and alcohol as an escape. Andrew entered the foster care system after neighbors complained of physical abuse and neglect. Andrew fell behind in school, was getting into trouble, and did not trust adults – until he met his CASA, Steve. CASA Steve was specially trained through Voices for Children’s Transitional Age Youth (TAY) program, and recommended that Andrew attend tutoring classes and therapy. With his CASA’s incredible support, Andrew has developed independent living skills, such as how to apply for financial aid and how to budget, and he began classes at a community college this past fall. #OneChildataTime
