Some of the rarest habitats on Earth exist right here in Britain - temperate rainforests draped in ancient moss and home to species found nowhere else. The main rainforest indicator species are a certain small subset of lichens that are very intolerant of drought and require moisture all year round.⁣

They have folk names like Goblin Lights, Merlin's Beard, something out of Tolkien or old English legend.⁣
