US President Donald Trump has said he “probably will” consider pulling troops out of Spain and Italy, after earlier this week threatening to do similar in Germany. ⁣

"Yeah, probably, I probably will,” Trump told reporters. “Why shouldn't I, look, why shouldn't I? Italy has not been of any help to us. And Spain has been horrible. Absolutely horrible."⁣
"But we didn't need the help. And to a certain extent I asked them I didn't need their help. And I said, 'Yeah, we'd love to have you help' because I wanted to see if they do it. And they, in all cases they said, 'we don't want to get involved.' ⁣

On Wednesday, Trump said ​his administration was looking at cuts to US forces in Germany and a decision would be made soon.⁣

Last month, Trump threatened to impose a full US trade embargo ​on Spain after Madrid refused to let ​the ⁠US military use its bases for missions linked to strikes on Iran.⁣
⁣
As of December 2025, the US had just over 68,000 active-duty military personnel assigned permanently in its overseas ⁠bases in ​Europe, data from ​the US Defense Manpower Data Center shows. More than half - about 36,400 - are based in ​Germany.⁣
