US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone Wednesday for more than an hour and a half, their first publicly announced conversation since early March.⁣

According to the Kremlin, Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine around Russia’s May 9 Victory Day commemorations — similar to last year’s three-day pause that was not negotiated with Kyiv. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Trump backed the idea. Trump told reporters he had suggested “a little bit of a ceasefire” and said he believes a broader deal to end the conflict could come “relatively quickly.” Moscow said Putin maintained that Russian forces hold the strategic initiative on the battlefield.⁣

Trump said Putin offered to help on the issue of Iran's enriched uranium, a key obstacle to a deal to end the Iran war, but "I said I'd much rather have you be involved with ending the war with Ukraine."⁣

Ukrainian officials have previously accused Russia of violating declared truces, including during a short Orthodox Easter pause. There is no current arrangement for a similar call between Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though that could change.⁣

Both Kyiv and Moscow remain far apart on core terms: Ukraine has rejected Russian ultimatums, including on territory; Russia has rejected an unconditional ceasefire along current lines while continuing strikes on Ukrainian cities.⁣
