Mind of a photographer:

(Gonna start giving the TLDR first as I don’t expect everyone wants to delve into my thought processes behind an image, but hey, some of you have expressed that you like the info, so here goes.)

Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba catches a pass during pregame warmups prior to their game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Thoughts behind the shot: 

In and of themselves, early pregame photos are pretty easy - players are out running, stretching, catching passes in workout clothes a couple of hours before kickoff. It’s the calm before the storm. Everything is a bit more casual than once kickoff happens. 

As a team photographer, I get different access than members of the media (mentioning that for clarity, not as a flex lol). I don’t take that access for granted and try to use it wisely.

In this situation, JSN was the only player on the field and I think I was the only photographer. I made kind of “standard” shots with a medium telephoto of him catching passes from a ball machine. Started to get closer and wider with my lens, until I was next to him and low, shooting wide and trying to capture him and the signature arches that grace the room of Lumen Field. At this point, the photo is pretty easy as he’s not really moving, so I’m only making a few frames at a time.

Then I decide to get lower and more beneath him for a view from the ground. He was standing so I kind of put my camera on the ground under and in front of him, using the flip out screen on the camera for framing. 

Shot a couple properly exposed which resulted in a  nice image that didn’t feel “special” yet. 

Last decision was to then underexpose for the sky, allowing him to fall into a bit into silhouette, letting the stadium roof and lights help complete the composition. 

I think this is a compelling image for those reasons and would welcome your feedback.
