Study Abroad Spotlight: Hong Kong

Meet Jaden Ochoa ’27, a history major with a minor in education from San Antonio, Texas, who has been studying abroad in Hong Kong.

Jaden is spending the semester at Lingnan University, where he was drawn by the opportunity to experience a completely different culture and environment.

Having never left the United States before, studying in Hong Kong felt like a big step and the perfect challenge.

He was especially interested in the city’s blend of Eastern and Western influences, as well as Lingnan’s liberal arts focus, which reminded him of Trinity while still offering a unique experience.

This semester, Jaden has been taking courses such as Urban History of Hong Kong and The Transmission of East Asian Art, both of which have deepened his understanding of the region’s culture and history.

His days have often been spent in class, followed by time exploring the city and trying local food. Some of his favorites include rice noodles and xiao long bao, along with discovering new tea spots.

One of the most meaningful parts of his experience has been learning to navigate challenges in a new country, from language barriers to adjusting to daily life. Over time, he has grown more confident and appreciative of the experience.

Jaden has also been struck by how diverse Hong Kong is, with each area offering a different mix of culture, language, and atmosphere.

His advice to Trinity students: take the risk. Stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to growth, new perspectives, and unforgettable experiences.
