72 years ago today history was made.

In what is considered one of the greatest breakthroughs in track history, Roger Bannister broke the “impossible” four-minute barrier in the mile on May 6, 1954 on the Iffley Road track in Oxford. His historic record lasted just 46 days until Australian runner John Landy ran 3:58.0. 

The current world record of 3:43.13, held by Hicham El Guerrouj, has stood untouched for nearly 27 years. However, Josh Kerr has recently announced he will make an attempt at the record at the London Diamond League meeting on July 18, 2026.
