Developed by researchers at the University of Southern Denmark, this autonomous drone is designed to solve the biggest limitation in the industry: battery life. While most commercial drones are capped at about 20–40 minutes of flight, this system allows for essentially unlimited endurance. When the drone detects its battery is low, it uses a combination of mmWave radar and computer vision to locate the nearest high-voltage power line. It then maneuvers above the wire and uses a specially designed, passively actuated gripper to "latch on," much like a bird on a wire.

The secret to the "infinite" charge is an onboard inductive charger that harvests magnetic energy directly from the live power line. It doesn't even need a physical electrical connection to the internal wire; it simply sits on the line and "siphons" power to recharge its batteries while it rests. Once topped up, it unlatches and continues its inspection mission. This innovation could revolutionize how we monitor thousands of miles of rural grid lines, eliminating the need for human pilots to swap batteries or for expensive ground-based charging stations in remote areas.
