The Pauper’s Body.

London, 1847.

Eliza dies inside a workhouse infirmary.

They wait for someone to claim her.
No husband comes.
No child arrives.
No family can afford the burial.

So the workhouse makes a decision.

She is not buried.

Her name is entered in a ledger.
One column for death.
One column for disposal.

Her body is sent to a medical school.

Students call it anatomy.
Doctors call it progress.
The parish calls it practical.

Eliza is a composite figure based on documented Victorian poverty, workhouse, and medical dissection practices.

Her story represents the poor whose lives were controlled by institutions — and whose bodies could still be used after death.

She owned almost nothing in life.

And when she died poor,
she did not even keep her body.

This was legal.
